Welcome Back Bulldogs!
Welcome Students!
My name is Mrs. Bruce and I look forward to being your Advisory and Homeroom teacher this school year. This is not an actual, academic class. We will mainly use this shortened class as a check in, and I will serve as your student advocate. This means that I am here for you, should you have any issues or just need a soft place to land after a hard ordeal or day. I can help to support you with any questions or concerns, as you may need assistance in this exciting, high school adventure!
I would like to close with a little bit about myself. I have been teaching for 23 years. I have taught all content areas, including Math, Science, Social Studies, and English in grades 6 through 12. I am from Lynchburg, Virginia and I received my teaching degree at Radford University, located not far from Virginia Tech. I had the great honor of being chosen to teach abroad in Nottingham, England while finishing up my student teaching. I also was honored by being chosen as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Teacher of the Year in 2000.
I live on Topsail Island, near Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. I will celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary in July of this year. My husband is also a teacher. He teachers middle school in Onslow County. We have one child, a son named Jake. Jake was born with terminal brain cancer, and had only a 10% chance of survival. After having 3 tumors removed from his brainstem before the age of 4, he is now 20 years old, attending college, and has been cancer-free for almost 14 years.
I have been handed many tough battles in my life, which has made me a better person and teacher. I have a very special place in my heart for my students, and I know all to well how all of us struggle with adversity. I hope to build a bond with you all this year that will last an eternity. Given my life struggles, I am very approachable and helpful when my students experience adversity in their own lives. I will always offer you all a soft place to land and support as you travel through all of the difficulties in your own lives. Never hesitate to reach out for help. I will always have your back! Now, get ready for the time of your life! High School is a BLAST! You will create memories that will stay with you forever; make them great!
This is my little family.
