Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category American Poems) for Friday, December 23, 2022 (Season 39, Game 75):

In an 1847 poem this character sees her town of Grand-Pré burned, but finally reunites with her beau for a kiss before his death

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ardi Mendoza, an emergency medicine resident from New York, New York
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, December 23, 2022 (1)
Rebecca Triano, a chemistry lecturer from Lambertville, New Jersey
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, December 23, 2022 (2)
Ray Lalonde, a scenic artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (6-day total: $166,200)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, December 23, 2022 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After becoming only the second Canadian to ever win six games on Jeopardy on yesterday’s show, Ray Lalonde looks to continue his winning ways on tonight’s Jeopardy; Rebecca Triano and Ardi Mendoza would like to become champion for Christmas themselves!

I want to answer what has become a “frequently asked question” over on J! Archive—or, at least, a question frequently asked by a single troll getting on my nerves. To the question, “Is the search feature [on J! Archive] ever coming back?” Yes. It is. The original search function was badly in need of a rewrite—it was only ever intended as rudimentary and never intended to scale to the more-than-450,000-clue size that J! Archive currently is. The issue is that J! Archive is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers who give their time generously to the community to work on the Archive and that these volunteers need to work around jobs and families. Additionally, this fall’s introduction of Triple Jeopardy! in Celebrity Jeopardy! only delayed the search function’s relaunch (as the backend coding time budgeted for the search function needed to be reapportioned to handle Triple Jeopardy.)

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Evangeline is the title character of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famed 1847 poem set during the time period of the expulsion of the Acadians; the poem told the story of the love of Evangeline Bellefontaine and Gabriel Lajeunesse and their separation when the British forcibly removed them from Acadia (present-day New Brunswick/Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island/Maine) Grand-Pré itself is found in present-day Nova Scotia, on the south shore of the Minas Basin.

Longfellow had heard the story of the Acadians from Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the story of separated Acadian lovers was learned from a Boston minister. Today, Evangeline is one of Longfellow’s most famous works.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Whether or not Ray is considered the second-most winningest Canadian in the show’s history depends on whether or not Bob Blake’s $10,000 winnings from Super Jeopardy! and Bob Blake’s $5,000 prize from the Ultimate Tournament of Champions are counted.
  • Today’s box score: December 23, 2022 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Ray $20,200 Ardi $13,200 Rebecca $6,400)

Ray: Standard cover bet over Ardi is $6,201. (Actual bet: $6,300)

Rebecca: If Ardi bets the minimum to cover Ray’s incorrect response and is incorrect himself, he falls to $12,400. Thus, you should bet at least $6,001 to have a chance at second place. (Actual bet: $5,000)

Ardi: You must bet at least $800 to have the best chance of winning. (Actual bet: $10,000)
