Because pure silver is generally seen as too soft for modern use, it is usually alloyed with other metals, generally copper, in order to increase its strength. This became known as “sterling silver”; the true etymology of “sterling” is still debated. As a way of ensuring the quality of sterling silver, the English legally required 12 troy ounces of sterling silver to contain 11oz, 2.25dwt of pure silver and 17.75dwt of alloyed metal—approximately 92.6% silver. This later moved to an alloy of 92.5% silver, and in 1851, Tiffany & Co. signed an agreement with New York silversmith John C. Moore to create silverware pieces. As part of that agreement, Moore used the English sterling silver standard, which was later adopted throughout the United States for sterling silver.

While Lianne got to the Daily Double, Nam picked up 7 correct in the opening round to jump out into the lead. He had at $5,200 at the break, to Mark’s $1,000 and Lianne’s $800.

Nam 7 correct 0 incorrect
Mark 3 correct 1 incorrect

Lianne plays in a classic rock cover band.
Nam got The Call the same day his mom’s car was stolen.

All three players had good segments after the break—except for maybe Nam failing to pick up a key “December” in a clue about Gene Autry. Lianne sat second after 30 clues, with Mark picking first in Double Jeopardy.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: The Picture Of Someone Named Grey; Shared International Lakes; Name That Author; 20th Century Song, 21st Century Ad; I’ll Remember Late April; “Pro” Nouns)

Nam may have had a case of “once bitten, twice shy”—after missing the first Daily Double, he bet just $2,000 on the last one—which meant that Mark was able to keep Nam from having a runaway on the final clue of the round.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Nam 25 correct 2 incorrect
Mark 17 correct 4 incorrect
Lianne 8 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 4 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Nam $17,600
Mark $9,000
Lianne $7,000

The two Americans got Tiffany, the Canadian did not—and that means that Mark is our new champion! He returns tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Lianne $7,000 + $7,000 = $14,000 (What is Tiffany?)
Mark $9,000 + $8,601 = $17,601 (What is Tiffany?) (1-day total: $17,601)
Nam $17,600 – $401 = $17,199 (What is Wells Fargo?)
